The longevity of feeling happy about your elective plastic surgery depends on the reason why you chose to have plastic surgery in the first place. When I hear my patients tell me that they chose or want to have plastic surgery to spark their romantic relationship or attract one, it makes me sad. The truth is, by having self-worth is the key to finding happiness, which is not found in plastic surgery. The irony is that happiness comes to you BECAUSE you have self-worth. Elective plastic surgery should be to ENHANCE that sense of self-worth. It should not be to cover up or suppress bad experiences.

When attempts to avoid unpleasant thoughts about ourselves, we place a lot of mental energy in wanting others to praise us. Social distancing is a dream-crusher to one’s weak self-esteem, and selfies just won’t do.

If elective plastic surgery is a means to an end, you will suffer. If elective plastic surgery compliments your already good self-esteem and integrity, then, go for it!

My advice is to attend psychotherapy before deciding to have elective plastic surgery. It will bring much happiness to the experience for a long time.
